Frequently asked questions HVAC contractors are asking us about A2L and SEER

When did A2L become mandatory?

January 1, 2025, for new residential/light commercial systems. Check local rules for deadlines related to legacy stock installations.

Can I still sell SEER-rated units?

Only if they were manufactured before 2023 and are installed under approved exceptions, most regions are phasing this out.

What tools do I need for A2L systems?

You’ll need A2L-compatible leak detectors, recovery machines, charging tools, and updated PPE.

What if there are refrigerant shortages?

“Things are improving,” says Mike Edwards, General Manager of ECCO Supply Sacramento. “We’ve gone from strict limitations on pallet sizes to being able to order smaller, mixed quantities. That’s a clear sign the market is catching up and contractors should start seeing more availability.”

Are inverter systems required for SEER2 compliance?

Not technically, but they’re becoming the default way to meet the new efficiency targets, especially in variable climates.

What should I tell homeowners about these changes?

Focus on comfort, energy savings, and long-term performance. Frame it as a chance to upgrade, not a forced change.

Bottom line: Don’t fall behind

There’s no pause button on these changes. SEER2 and A2L are here. Inverter systems are already in customer homes. Contractors who get ahead now will have the edge: better installs, fewer callbacks, and smoother inspections.

  • Check regional SEER2 rules before quoting jobs
  • Lead with inverter-driven equipment where possible
